New License Application Fees (by Category)
A new license has two parts: a one-time application (exam) fee, plus the license fee for your category once you pass.
- Application fee (written exam + first trial): Rs 500 (Rs 1,000 in Gandaki and Karnali)
- Trial retest (per attempt): Rs 400 to Rs 500
- Medical / color test: around Rs 15 at the office
- Form and stamp: about Rs 5 plus a Rs 10 revenue stamp
The license fee itself depends on your vehicle category, and the same figure applies whether you are getting a new license or renewing.
| Category | Vehicle type | License fee (NPR) |
|---|---|---|
| A / K | Motorcycle, scooter | Rs 1,500 |
| B | Car, jeep, van | Rs 2,000 |
| Medium (C–F) | Minibus, light truck, tractor | Rs 2,500 |
| Heavy (G–I) | Bus, truck | Rs 3,000 |
License Renewal Fees
Renewal costs the same category fee as above: Rs 1,500 for a bike, Rs 2,000 for a car, and up to Rs 3,000 for heavy vehicles. You get a 90-day grace period after expiry with no penalty. Renew later than that and a late fine is added, from 2× the fee (up to 1 year late) to 6× (4 to 5 years late), and the license is cancelled after 5 years. The full breakdown is in our Nepal driving license renewal guide.
Duplicate & Add-Category Fees
- Duplicate license (lost or damaged): Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000. A lost license also needs a police report.
- Add a new category (endorsement): about Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for lighter categories, and up to Rs 2,000 for heavy categories, plus the trial test fee. Some provinces have raised these in the recent revision.
Smart Card / Print Fee
There is no separate smart card fee. The smart card is your license, and the cost of printing it is already inside the license fee you pay. You do not pay extra to have the card printed or dispatched, and checking whether it has been printed is free.

Check Print Status →How to Pay DOTM Fees Online (eSewa, Khalti, ConnectIPS)
Once you select a service on the DOTM portal (applydlnew.dotm.gov.np), the fee, plus any late fine, shows on screen automatically. You then pay in one of these ways:
- Digital wallets: eSewa or Khalti
- Bank transfer: ConnectIPS or mobile / internet banking
- At the counter: cash, using a printed voucher
Keep the payment receipt. It carries your license number and works as temporary proof of a valid license while your smart card is printed.
Are Fees Different at Different Offices?
Yes, a little. The application fee is higher, at Rs 1,000, in Gandaki and Karnali provinces, while it stays at Rs 500 in most others. Provinces also set their own revisions, so the same category can cost slightly more at one office than another, and a recent 2083/84 revision pushed some category fees higher. In short, the core driving license fee Nepal applies nationwide, with small province-level differences on top. Check your office’s current rate on the portal before you pay so there are no surprises.
